Whether you do regular Brazilian jiu-jitsu or no-gi jiu-jitsu you have probably noticed people wearing spats. Of course, if you are somewhat new to BJJ you might wonder why people wear them. So let’s answer a few questions. The main question is why people wear spats in jiu-jitsu? But before that let us just answer the question: What are BJJ spats?
BJJ spats are compression pants that are typically worn alone, under grappling shorts or under the gi pants in BJJ. BJJ spats serve many purposes when practicing or rolling in BJJ. One of the big reasons for spats in BJJ is that they help keep your body temperature regulated.
Of course, BJJ spats are a little bit different from many other regular compression pants. They are typically much thicker and are made to hold up when you are rolling. Most spats are typically made of spandex, nylon, and polyester.
Of course, there are a ton of reasons that you should invest in a good pair of BJJ spats. This is true even if you choose to wear gi pants or grappling shorts. There are actually a good number of benefits to wearing spats when training jiu-jitsu. The first and most common reason is for temperature regulation.
BJJ Spats Are Important For Body Temperature Regulation
The most common reason for BJJ spats is that they help regulate your body temperature. This is very important for a number of reasons. The first one is that spats will help you keep your muscles warm when training.
This is important for helping you prevent muscle strains when training or competing in jiu-jitsu. In addition, by keeping your body temperature up you are less likely to experience muscle fatigue when training.
It is also commonly believed that BJJ spats help athletes stay flexible and keep their full range of motion when training. Not only that but a good pair of BJJ spats might even help athletes reduce swelling and even aid in faster recovery.
Of course, BJJ spats actually do more than keep your muscles warm. Think instead that they simply help regulate your body temperature. So they also help keep you cool as well. Wearing spats can help keep sweat off your body and help prevent chaffing. A good pair of BJJ spats should be thick enough to absorb a fair amount of sweat.
Becuse of this BJJ spats will not only keep your muscles warm but will also help you from overheating as well. All and all, spats are great for helping your body regulate a proper temperature.
BJJ Spats Are Great For Hygiene
BJJ spats are also very important for basic hygiene. This is because they help reduce sweat and help limit skin-to-skin contact when rolling. Of course, it is hard to completely avoid skin-to-skin contact in grappling sports.
That said, BJJ spats can help you avoid skin-to-skin contact to some level. This is especially true if you are also wearing a long sleeve rashguard for your upper body. That way, you are basically covered to some degree with the exception of your face, hands, and feet.
By wearing a rashguard and spats you are also helping prevent burning your skin on the mats. Along with that, you are helping protect your skin from certain diseases that can be found on BJJ mats. One of the most common being a staph infection.
Staph infections are all too common for people who train on grappling mats. This can happen for a number of reasons. It could be that the mats are not being cleaned properly or regularly. It could also be bad hygiene from people training at the gym.
Either way, there are only so many things that are under your control. One thing you can do is cover your body as much as possible when rolling BJJ. This helps you prevent getting a ton of sweat all over the mats.
After class, it is a good idea to make sure to wash your hands with anti-bacterial soap. Then take a shower as soon as you can after class. This way you are less likely to get an illness from training at your gym.
There are other bacterial infections and illnesses that you want to prevent as much as possible in BJJ. Another common one would be ringworm. A good pair of spats and rashguards along with good hygiene will certainly help prevent these issues in BJJ.

Should You Wear BJJ Spats Under Your Gi?
The next thing you might wonder is why would you wear jiu-jitsu spats if you are already wearing gi pants. After all, shouldn’t the gi pants protect me from sweat and germs as well? Well yes in some ways gi pants do serve as extra protection against sweat and germs.
However, gis are not designed to deal with sweat the same way that spats are. Also, your gi is probably not cheap and spats can help protect your gi from wearing out as well. Since BJJ spats are great for absorbing sweat, they will also help prevent sweat from getting to your gi.
This, in turn, will help prevent your gi from wearing down quicker than it needs to. Because of this, you should also consider wearing a rashguard under your gi as well. This will help keep your gi from absorbing all of your sweat.
In addition, by preventing your gi from getting covered in sweat you will also help prevent your gyms mats from becoming covered in sweat as well. This, of course, helps with the overall hygiene of your BJJ academy.
Of course, it is also important that your school cleans the mats properly but that is somewhat out of your control. That said, you should do everything in your power to help keep your gym as clean and disease-free as possible.
If everyone at your gym practiced hygiene and wore the proper clothing to the gym, there would be much less risk of diseases spreading at your academy. So for the best practice, you should wear both a rashguard and BJJ spats even if you are wearing a gi.
Where To Get Jiu-Jitsu Spats And How Much Do They Cost?
There are a number of places you can buy BJJ spats. The first place to check might be at your local jiu-jitsu academy. Otherwise, the best option would likely be to simply order jiu-jitsu spats online. You can find them on a number of websites.
Depending on the quality and brand, BJJ spats typically range from about 18-80 dollars. So depending on your budget, there are a few options to choose from. Quality is certainly important when it comes to BJJ spats.
That said, if you are looking for a cheaper option there are still a few decent choices. You can still get some good-quality plain spats. Look for some decent quality plain colored jiu-jitsu spats instead of cheaper spats with a cool design.
If you are looking to spend less money you can get a plain higher quality pair of spats for the same price as lower quality spats with logos or cool pattern designs. I would opt for basic black Sanabul compression pants or elite sports plain BJJ spats if I was looking to buy something on the cheaper side.
If you are looking to spend a little bit more on jiu-jitsu spats then I would suggest something made by Hayabusa, Fusion Fightwear, or perhaps Fuji. Honestly, there are a ton of great brands that make BJJ spats.
